A short-term visiting scholar is typically a group of scholars, often professors or research scholars, who comes to the United States for a limited period (usually up 1to 3 months) to engage in activities like lecturing, observing, study, or demonstrating special knowledge or skills. They often do so under a Business visa, a non-immigrant visa for exchange visitors.

A one-semester visiting scholar program allows individuals to spend a single semester at a host university, typically for teaching purposes, either teach courses or/and have observations of several courses. These programs are often designed for international scholars to engage in teaching or study at a U.S. university, contributing to academic and cultural exchange.

Visiting scholars at American University are individuals, typically on leave from another institution, who come to American Institutions to conduct research or participate in academic activities.
